I’m not sure if that’s bacterial vaginosis. If it has a fishy smell, then it is bacterial vaginosis.

A few other symptoms includes vaginal itching and irritation. If you notice these symptoms, you need to cure it asap.

I read a document earlier that gave advice on curing bacterial vaginosis naturally.

I’ll leave a link to the document below.

This might sound gross but it works, in the night time put a spoonful of plain yogurt up there (use a large syringe) and wear a pad to bed, the bacteria in the yogurt really helps maintain the proper bacteria there. It is a lot cheaper then buying pills all the time

I actually have the same problem as you when I get frequent yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis back and forth and it is really frustrating. The acidophilus pills work great though but it will not cure it. The medicine the actually really helped me is called Cleocin and it was prescribed by my Gyno. It’s a vaginal suppository and it cleans out everything. Another good product to keep the hormonal balance in your vagina is called RePhresh. Its great and you can buy it over the counter, although I wouldn’t use it until the vaginosis and yeast infections are gone. As for the acidophilus take those 2-3 times a day. Hope this helps! And if you need to talk more you can email me!

Ps. My gyno told me that acidophilus help with the good bacteria in the vagina!

I think your getting a little paranoid. If you treated the chlamydia and B.V. Then you should be able to have children, you all ready have one healthy baby so you should be able to have another healthy child.
I’m not infertile but I do have a chromosome defect which prevents me from carrying a pregnancy.
If you really want to know about your fertility status or issues then you should see a fertility specialist, that is how I found out about my chromosome defect. I had about 4 miscarriages before I went and found out what was going on and now I have decided that maybe kids are not meant to happen for me.

Is this a recurring yeast infection or something else?

I’ve been having yeast infection symptoms for about a year or so, but I was too embarassed to go to the doctor. At least I THOUGHT it was a yeast infection, until I searched pictures of what it might look like on a person, and I don’t have any of that rash-looking irritation, it’s just, well. yeast. I’m seventeen and I started having sex frequently the beginning of this year (same partner). I did end up working up the courage to tell my mom about the infection (but not about the sex…) and I’ve now been treated for a yeast infection 3 times. Not consecutively, but it came back after like a month. I am currently on birth control, so I’m not sure if that is affecting it, but I also suspect that this may not be a yeast infection, that it might be bacterial vaginosis, because I only have a milky-ish, thick discharge, and my ex boyfriend always told me it smelled. Like fish. What is this? And what should I tell my doctor?

admin answers:

You need to see a doctor to get tested. I have had recurring bacterial infections for years and recently have been told by a few people that it is most likely the way I used to wash my vagina…I’d use soap and sometimes it would get into my vagina therefore throwing off the PH level and making me more susceptible to infections whenever bacteria was introduced into my vagina via oral sex or regular intercourse. So if you are washing with soap you may want to stop using it IN your vagina…instead wash the outer part with your vagina with summers eve feminine soap and spread your lips and wash with water ONLY….IF your problem is bacterial infections then this may be your answer.

Good luck

I saw my regular MD for the past month for other symptoms, after a urine test said I had a UTI and gave me a dose of Cipro (3 pills/3 days.) I have finished this dosing and still 2 weeks later know that I am not right. I am going to go back t the Gyn again for a 4th treatment. Before the summer I have never had anything like this not even a yeast infection.

I have been going to my MD for other symptoms such has palpitations, high blood pressure (145/100), dizzy spells, nausea spells, fatigue, headaches, ear infections, flushing, periods of low body temp (94 deg) and low pulse, night sweats, sleep apnea and brown spots on my back.
Bacterial vaginosis?

was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis and just started taking the antibiotics today. The doctor prescribed me 500 mg, 2 a day for 7 days. My doctor said nothing about yeast, how will i know if my infection is cleared after taking the antibiotics, or if i have formed a yeast infection. Also, has anyone had to taket his antibiotic? Any weird side effects besides NO drinking of alcohol, i know. ? ALSO: When do symptoms start to clear up whil taking the antibiotics? I’m on my second day. Also my DR, said its non transmitable and said nothing about sex, can i have sex during treatment using a condom?

admin answers:

Yes an antibiotic can cause a yeast infection. It feeds the candida already present in our bodies and they can overgrow. You will know if you have a yeast infection because you will start to itch in the genital area and occasionally on other parts of your body as well. You will also get a white dicharge that looks like cottage cheese.

You may need a follow up appt. with your Dr. to re-test after finishing your antibiotic to be sure the bacterial infection cleared. If after you finish it, you have the same symptoms that made you seek treatment to begin with, you should be re-tested. If you find you have the symptoms of a yeast infection you can get an over the counter medication to treat it.

Do you and your partner a favor and always use a condom, especially while you have an infection. Your own immune system is lower and you need to take the extra precaution. Not only that, if you do get a yeast infecton, you can give that to your partner and then he can pass it back to you. No fun having to be treated again, when you could have prevented it to begin with.

As for your antibiotic, read your lable or the insert that came with it for the list of possible side effects. You did not name the kind of antibiotic prescribed. If you still can’t figure it out call the pharmacy where you had it filled and ask the pharmicist what to watch for as possible allergic reactions. You can have a reaction even if you have taken the same medication safely in the past. Some restrict you from exposure to sunlight due to the increased sensitivity to the sun the medication can cause. So call and ask if you don’t have the insert that was sent along with it.

Good advice by I Wanna Be a Fish, thanks for the helpful suggestions.

The best way by far to treat Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is naturally. That old adage you are what you eat was never more relevant. Simply by following a yeast free diet will help treat your BV and keep it away in three days. Foods that yeast organisms thrive on, like cheese, alcohol, chocolate, soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, fruits, fermented foods or those containing molds, like blue cheese, should be avoided.

Here are some other home remedies that might help (particularly if you are opposed to taking prescription medication, like an antibiotc, which most of the time works, but the symptoms reoccur more times than not). Acidopoholous . . .mentioned before – you can insert a tampon with plain vanilla in your vagina – which will soothe and give immediate relief or you can take an acidopholus pill (from your health food store or vitamin store).

Douching is another method – but rather than use and over the counter formula that has harmful chemicals, simply use one tablespoon of vinegar per quart of water.

The antioxidants in vitamins, like vitamins A, C, D and E, as well as, B complex, help in treating bacterial vaginosis naturally. Topical applications of vitamin E from prepared creams or powdered capsules help relieve itching.

And finally a warm bath (except don’t use soap as it takes out the skins natural oils and acts as a barrier for the bodies natural germ fighting mechanism.

Women with BV were more than three times as likely as women who were not infected to have pregnancy losses during the first weeks of their second trimester. It also has been proven that the risk for late miscarriage and spontaneous preterm delivery are associated with BV.

If BV is recurrent it increases the risk of preterm delivery by nine compared with women who did not get BV again. Increased risk of infections at the time of birth including postpartum endometritis, postpartum sepsis, post-caesarean wound infection and episiotomy wound infection.

There is an increased risk of giving birth to a low birth-weight baby and this is one of the leading causes of infant death in the US.

Women with BV are also more susceptible to: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infection and inflammation of the upper female genital tract. Tubal factor infertility is caused by fallopian tube damage. The fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus.

The bottom line is untreated Bacterial Vaginosis is just not worth taking the risk. While it is true, that BV might be recurring, the inconvenience of being treated is just not worth the risks of not treating it. I repeat – take care of yourself.

There are many different ways to treat Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). Some people say you can put plain yogurt on a tampon and insert it in your vagina overnight and that will help kill the bacteria (the acidophollyis) – but that is mostly an old wives tale (not to mention a mess in your panties).

BV can be treated with antibiotics and is shown to be 85-90% effective when taken properly. Metronidazole can be taken orally twice daily for seven days. This is believed to be the most effective treatment and is the preferred treatment particularly if the woman is pregnant or breastfeeding. It also is available in gel form which is applied to the vagina once daily for five days. Metronidazole reacts with alcohol and makes the patient feel very ill. You should not consume alcohol for at least 48 hours after taking Metronidazole (trust me on this).

Your doctor can prescribe Flagyl (in a pill) or as a cream (Metrogel or Cleocin). The pill has shown to produce some unpleasant side effects – unlike the cream which has no side effects, however, the pill has proven to be more effective. Another pill (with less side effects) is Tindamax, an antibiotic, however, it is common for a recurrence of BV even after successful treatment with either the pill or the cream. More than half of those treated experience recurrent symptoms within 12 months. It is unclear why this happens, however, another course of antibiotics is usually prescribed.

Clindamycin is an alternative antibiotic often used if metronidazole did not work or the BV came back. It is available either as a cream applied to the vagina once daily for seven days or in capsule form taken twice daily for seven days. It is important to remember when taking Clindamycin, that barrier contraception methods, like latex condoms, diaphragms and caps may be less effective. Please make sure to use additional contraception as a precautionary measure.

The symptoms of Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) vary from woman to woman but primarily are vaginal discharge, which may be gray or white in color; an unpleasant smell or odor (often described as fishy smelling). Some of the other symptoms which are less common are a burning sensation during urination as well as after sex; and an itching inside and around the vagina. In a lot of cases, however, women with BV report no signs or symptoms at all.

BV occurs when the normal balance of bacteria in a woman’s vagina is disrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of certain bacteria.

Although you might be inclined to douche during this time to alleviate the symptoms described above, it is advisable not to until you are diagnosed by a doctor. Douching may hide the signs of infection and can also worsen the condition. A doctor may see the signs of BV during an examination, however, only a lab test of the vaginal fluid can confirm this.

Getting diagnosed is your best bet since women who do have BV are more susceptible to be exposed to the HIV virus; it also increases the chances that an HIV-infected woman can pass HIV to her sex partner(s). Complications of untreated BV include an increased risk of contracting and passing along HIV and other STDs after exposure to them during sexual activity. Complications also include the development of pelvic inflammatory disease and an increased risk of post-op infection after vaginal or pelvic surgery, such as hysterectomy and abortion. In pregnant women, untreated bacterial vaginosis can lead to preterm labor and preterm delivery.

Our bodies are like luxury high end automobiles – we have to listen to the signs and symptoms and troubleshoot the problem before we let the mechanic (gyno) under the hood (so to speak).
