Joseph asks…

Is white cottage cheese like discharge normal while treatment for bacterial vaginosis?

I went to my doctor to have a pap smear done..

When they got the results back, everything came back perfect except I had a bacterial infection, Bacterial Vaginosis.

(The only symptoms I had were an odor and a creamy white sometimes yellow discharge)

I did the gel medicine for seven nights..

Ever since I started the medication everytime I went to the washroom, a White cottage cheese like discharge would come out.

Is that just the bacteria being pushed out or should I be concerned?

Also, how long should I wait to have sex?

admin answers:

Are you taking MetroGel? If you are, this is a really common side effect of the medication. Completely normal.
I would wait until you are done the course of the medication before you have sex again.

Mark asks…

What is the best treatment for bacterial vaginosis??Metrogel hasn’t worked.?

Symptoms come back as soon as I finish the meds.
I have seen a doctor. I am asking for those who have personal experience to answer, not just opinions.(Unless you are a doctor)

Flagyl is supposed to be the best treatment for BV. It’s an oral medication you take 2x a day for 1 week. Make sure you eat right before you take it. If I didn’t eat it bothered my stomach.

Thomas asks…

Chronic Bacterial Vaginosis- Symptom of another condition?

Last year May I was diag. with bacterial vaginosis and treated with a dose of 3 pills at one time. (I also had an abnormal pap & colposcopy which came out negative.) I did not feel right and went back recently. I was diag. with vaginosis again and was given Flagyl for 7 days. I saw my regular MD for the past month for other symptoms, after a urine test said I had a UTI and gave me a dose of Cipro (3 pills/3 days.) I have finished this dosing and still 2 weeks later know that I am not right. I am going to go back t the Gyn again for a 4th treatment. Before the summer I have never had anything like this not even a yeast infection.

I have been going to my MD for other symptoms such has palpitations, high blood pressure (145/100), dizzy spells, nausea spells, fatigue, headaches, ear infections, flushing, periods of low body temp (94 deg) and low pulse, night sweats, sleep apnea and brown spots on my back. Now Im just nervous that the bacterial vaginosis could be a sign something else??

Lizzie asks…

Bacterial vaginosis?

was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis and just started taking the antibiotics today. The doctor prescribed me 500 mg, 2 a day for 7 days. I have heard that sometimes it doesn’t clear the infection and also sometimes causes yeast infection. My doctor said nothing about yeast, how will i know if my infection is cleared after taking the antibiotics, or if i have formed a yeast infection. Also, has anyone had to taket his antibiotic? Any weird side effects besides NO drinking of alcohol, i know. ? ALSO: When do symptoms start to clear up whil taking the antibiotics? I’m on my second day. Also my DR, said its non transmitable and said nothing about sex, can i have sex during treatment using a condom?

admin answers:

Yes an antibiotic can cause a yeast infection. It feeds the candida already present in our bodies and they can overgrow. You will know if you have a yeast infection because you will start to itch in the genital area and occasionally on other parts of your body as well. You will also get a white dicharge that looks like cottage cheese.

You may need a follow up appt. with your Dr. to re-test after finishing your antibiotic to be sure the bacterial infection cleared. If after you finish it, you have the same symptoms that made you seek treatment to begin with, you should be re-tested. If you find you have the symptoms of a yeast infection you can get an over the counter medication to treat it.

Do you and your partner a favor and always use a condom, especially while you have an infection. Your own immune system is lower and you need to take the extra precaution. Not only that, if you do get a yeast infecton, you can give that to your partner and then he can pass it back to you. No fun having to be treated again, when you could have prevented it to begin with.

As for your antibiotic, read your lable or the insert that came with it for the list of possible side effects. You did not name the kind of antibiotic prescribed. If you still can’t figure it out call the pharmacy where you had it filled and ask the pharmicist what to watch for as possible allergic reactions. You can have a reaction even if you have taken the same medication safely in the past. Some restrict you from exposure to sunlight due to the increased sensitivity to the sun the medication can cause. So call and ask if you don’t have the insert that was sent along with it.
